Dark arts of an office rat

By Carol Midgley

Don't be fooled by cosy management-speak about empowerment, teambuilding and synergy. Office politics is a brutal battlefield where the rat is the winner. Carol Midgley examines the rules for the modern office rodent STEP away from your desk a moment and take a long, hard look at your

boss. Hold that stare. Now dismiss any idea you might have that he or she is your ``friend'. No. Your boss, and any other work colleague for that matter, is not and

never can be your ally. Office_rat.PDF

Case against the affirmative

By Greg Roberts

A rush for gender balance on the Bench worries some about how judges are appointed, writes Greg Roberts

The state's former chief magistrate Di Fingleton is doing charity work in a halfway house as she serves a six-month jail sentence for threatening a witness. Fingleton tried to demote magistrate Basil Gribbin after he supported a judicial appeal by magistrate Anne Thacker against Fingleton's decision to transfer her. Public opinion regards the jailing of Hanson and Ettridge as manifestly unfair, though many lawyers arguethat the punishment fits the crime. Fingleton has won widespread sympathy for her predicament. Irony in final event for Scutt

THERE is a touch of irony to departing Anti-Discrimin-ation Commissioner Jocelynne Scutt's final major event. The conference, Co-operation out of Conflict -- Beyond Bullying, will be held at Wrest Point from September 21 to 24.

It is ironic because Ms Scutt said the commission had had to deal with ``pressure, bullying and abusive conduct' and that she personally had been subjected ``to the most extraordinary conduct to which no person . . . should be subjected'. She will leave the post when her five-year contract ends on October 22. JOCELYNNE_TWO.PDF

Dare to dissent and expect humiliation with prejudice

By Michael Duffy

THE rot continues. It was not the story of Lt-Col Lance Collins that struck

connoisseurs of government bullying so much this week.

No, it was the Government's release of a report damning Captain Martin Toohey, who

had agreed with Collins's criticisms of intelligence gathering.

It was a reminder that the Government will attack not only dissenters but even the supporters of dissenters. LANCE_COLLINS.PDF
